The Colombo is part of a growing movement in Aotearoa to welcome dogs into shops, restaurants and public spaces. Our central area is dog-friendly for friendly dogs, provided you’ve got Fido on a leash (or in a handbag).
We don’t just tolerate dogs, we celebrate them! Last year’s Colombo Dog Fashion Show was a huge hit and will be repeated in October.
As well as a swing in public opinion, legislative changes have also helped the cause of dogs in shops. A new Food Act in 2014 removed prohibitions on animals being allowed in food premises. Businesses can now choose to let dogs into customer dining areas as long as they manage any risks the dogs pose to food safety.
In Christchurch the council also got on board. A new dog control policy and bylaw in 2016 replaced a mishmash of regulations with one easy-to-understand rule for the entire central city – dogs on a leash are good to go.
So bring your furry pal in to The Colombo for a doggy date and set yourself up at one of the central tables for a happy lunch in the company of your best friend.
While our central area is dog-friendly, each store in the complex has its own policy so you’ll need to check with staff whether it’s OK to bring your dog into your favourite shops
